Yukata
Originally Yukata is called Yukatabira (kimono without lining). People used to wear it when they take a bath. (in old days Japanese used to take a sauna, not like taking a bath now). Later, it was worn after taking a bath and since the mid of edo period, people became wear Yukata substitute for Katabira in summer. That’s why it is called Yukata, literally means cloth for bath.

time, place, occasion
Basically, Yukata is worn at Fireworks festivals or summer festivals and at home to make yourself comfortable. This makes feeling of Japanese summer. In the past, people put on Yukata without underwear. Nowadays, it would rather be dressed Yukata with underwear, hada-juban or susoyoke(kind of petticoat for kimono). Naga-juban is not for Yukata.

Men’s Yukata
Recently in Japan, more and more men wear yukata to enjoy summer. You can easily put on Yukata of men than that of women. So let’s enjoy freely, as a casual street costume or for your relaxing time.
